I sat in my car for almost fifteen minutes, staring at the steering wheel while people walked past my windshield carrying coffee and talking about their plans for the day.
Their lives continued as if nothing had happened, while mine had just collapsed in the space of five minutes.
My phone buzzed. It was Emily, my wife.
“How did the presentation go?” she texted.
I stared at those six words, wondering how I could explain that I had just lost the job that paid our mortgage and kept our two daughters comfortable.
I finally typed, “Something happened at work. I’ll explain when I get home.”
Before I could start the engine, my phone rang again. The number was unfamiliar.
“Is this Christopher Bennett?” a woman asked.
“Yes. Who’s calling?”
“My name is Eleanor Whitmore. You helped me this morning.”
My heart suddenly began to race. I had no idea that the woman I stopped to save would soon change my entire life.
