PART 1: THE STRANGER WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING2 min read

I sat in my car for almost fifteen minutes, staring at the steering wheel while people walked past my windshield carrying coffee and talking about their plans for the day. Their lives continued as if nothing had happened, while mine had just collapsed in the space of five minutes. My phone buzzed. It was Emily, my wife. “How did the presentation go?” she texted. I stared at those six words, wondering how I could explain that I had just lost the job that paid our mortgage, bought groceries, and kept our two daughters in the comfortable little home they believed would always be theirs. I finally typed, “Something happened at work. I’ll explain when I get home.” Before I could start the engine, my phone rang again. The number was unfamiliar. I answered reluctantly. “Is this Christopher Bennett?” a woman asked. Her voice sounded weak, but there was an unmistakable strength beneath it. “Yes. Who’s calling?” “My name is Eleanor Whitmore. You helped me this morning.” I immediately sat upright. Eleanor was the elderly woman I had found beside the road, clutching her chest and struggling to breathe. I had pulled over, called emergency services, and stayed with her until the paramedics arrived. When she lost consciousness briefly, I had held her hand and kept talking to her, terrified that she might die before help arrived. I had followed the ambulance to the hospital, provided my statement, and left only after the doctors assured me she was stable. By then, I had already missed Gavin’s presentation. “Mrs. Whitmore, how are you feeling?” I asked. “Much better, thanks to you. The doctors said I was fortunate someone stopped.” Relief washed over me. At least something good had come from the morning. Then she asked, “I was told you lost your job because you stopped to help me. Is that true?” I hesitated before explaining what had happened in Gavin’s office. I described the meeting, his accusations, and the way he had told me to keep driving next time. Eleanor remained silent until I finished. Then her voice changed. “Christopher, are you still at your office?” “I’m in the parking lot.” “Good. Please stay there.” I frowned. “Why?” Her answer was immediate. “Because I’m coming to see the man who saved my life, and I would very much like to meet the person who thought firing him was a reasonable response.” Before I could reply, she ended the call. I stared at my phone, wondering who Eleanor Whitmore really was. I had no idea that within the next hour, my former boss would discover the answer too.
