So, my younger sister planned her birthday for her, a couple friends, me, our mom, and our mom’s friend to go to a restaurant. My sister’s friends bailed last minute and didn’t go. My sister didn’t want to celebrate anymore and wanted to cancel. Our mom convinced her to keep the plan and so we went.
When we were at the restaurant, my sister was disinterested and irritated (understandably). Our mom tried to cheer my sister up but it wasn’t really working. I went on my phone because my sister was also on hers (and was ignoring everyone) and we were waiting for the food. I got an email notification where it said in the notification the university I wanted to get into the most, and congratulations. I opened it and it confirmed that I got in and welcomed me. For a second I just stared at it in disbelief but then I got really excited. I looked at my mom and her friend and I said that I got into the university. My mom’s friend got really excited and congratulated me, but my mom gave a small congrats and told me to let my grandma (who’d been waiting for the news) know. I started tearing up a bit because I never thought I’d be able to get in. My mom gave me a look and I asked her why she’s giving me that look, she refused to answer. My sister went to to the dessert bar to pick out a cake and my mom told me to turn it down on my excitement because we were celebrating my sister’s birthday and we needed to let her have the attention. It stung a bit but I agreed because I wanted my sister to have a good birthday.
We went to the mall together and my mom got frustrated because my sister wasn’t getting excited and wasn’t feeling better. We split up in the store and when we joined up again, both my mom and sister were upset and had just had a fight. In the car, my mom got frustrated and started yelling at us, getting mad that my sister wasn’t being grateful and that I was selfish for announcing my university acceptance at my sister’s birthday. My sister started crying and I eventually yelled at my mom to shut up.
AITAH?
